Design and Art Studies invites submissions to its ongoing Research Topic 1: Art and Design Works  Collection, a recurring publication series dedicated to the academic presentation of original creative works in visual art and design. This topic provides a platform for integrating creative practice within academic publishing, ensuring each accepted submission is reviewed, archived, and disseminated through scholarly channels.

In addition to publication, selected outstanding works will be considered for exhibition opportunities in partnership with Asia Design Week and affiliated international programs.

Aims and Scope

This Research Topic focuses on the academic recognition of artistic and design-based practices. It aims to publish high-quality visual works that demonstrate conceptual depth, technical expertise, or cultural relevance. Submissions will be curated as a scholarly collection with formal metadata and indexing to ensure long-term academic visibility.

All accepted works will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and published in Design and Art Studies, indexed in platforms such as Google Scholar and ROAD, with further indexing applications in progress.

Scope of Creative Works

Submissions may include but are not limited to:

  • Fine Arts: painting, printmaking, calligraphy, sculpture, mixed media

  • Design: graphic design, product design, fashion, environmental/spatial design, digital media

  • Photography: documentary, conceptual, experimental

  • New Media and Experimental Work: installation, AI-generated visuals, moving image, interactive or computational media

All works must be original and unpublished at the time of submission.

Submission Guidelines

Each contributor may submit one series of works consisting of 1 to 4 images.

Image Requirements:

  • Format: JPG

  • Minimum file size: 10 MB per image

  • Presentation: high-resolution, clean background (no walls, hands, or unrelated objects visible)

Required Documentation (in a separate Word document):

  1. Full name of author (in English and native language)

  2. Institutional affiliation and academic/professional title

  3. Email and contact information

  4. Title of the work (in English and native language)

  5. Description of the work (200–400 words; bilingual preferred)

  6. Keywords (3–5; bilingual preferred)

  7. ORCID iD (registration required at https://orcid.org)

Submission Schedule

This Research Topic is published twice per year:

  • Submission deadlines:

    • May 31 (for July publication)

    • November 30 (for January publication of the following year)

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Publication Fee

  • Publication fee: USD 150 (or equivalent in local currency)

  • One complimentary print copy will be provided to the author

  • Authors promoting the call through academic or institutional channels may request a 20% fee reduction

Ethical and Legal Notice

  • All submitted works must be the original creation of the author(s) and must not infringe upon the rights of any third party

  • Authors retain full copyright. Upon acceptance, non-exclusive publication and distribution rights are granted to the journal

  • All submissions are subject to academic review; plagiarism, copyright infringement, or ethical misconduct will result in rejection and potential blacklisting
